General Director of the CIGB was elected as a member of the Council of State

Habana, March 7. The Cuban’s legislature on Thursday elected Dr. Luis Herrera Martinez as a member of the Council of State. Among the 10 new figures on the Council of State, three have been involved in modernising the economy: Communications Minister Ignacio Gonzalez, the head of the group of state computer and Internet service companies, Ramiro Valdés and Dr. Herrera. "This is an example of what elections should be, with 97 per cent participation, free of money and corruption and totally transparent," Vice President Carlos Lage said.

Dr. Herrera has been working as a scientist for more than 30 years with significant results in the field of Biotechnology. At present, he continues conducting efforts in the development of new pharmaceutical and agricultural products derived from the scientific research at the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB).

The CIGB is an institution devoted to basic and applied research, product development and production of vaccines and therapeutics. The research and development of the agricultural products is also an essential part of the CIGB project portfolio. The CIGB has extensive experience in the recombinant DNA technology dated back to 1980, with more than 1300 employees, owning the most modern and efficient technology for Life Sciences and Biotechnology research and carefully studied-beforehand facilities so as to ease the quiet and continuous workflow with a total area of more than 70 000 sq. m.
