ANALYSIS OF IMPORTS OF VACCINES

The analysis is based upon State Customs Committee data and includes all vaccines imported into Russia for the period January 2000 - June 2001.
During the first half of 2001 the value of vaccine imports was $10.7 Mio. which is 67% more than the same indicator in the first half of 2000 ($6.4 Mio.), or 43% of the total for 2000 ($24.7 Mio.). The share of AIPM members in the overall value of import of vaccines dropped in 2001 and accounted for 73% vs. about 90% in 2000 (both in 1st and 2nd halves). One of the reason is the decrease of the shares of Aventis Pasteur by 12 p.p. and Solvay Pharmaceuticals by 6 p.p. in the 1st half '01 vs. 1st half '00. At the same time the share of Heber Biotec SA in the overall import of vaccines increased by 9 p.p. for the same period. The Serum Institute of India Ltd and Immuno AG also increased their shares by about 5 p.p. and 4 p.p. respectively.
The main foreign supplier of vaccines, GlaxoSmithKline, had a 41% share (Table 1).
GlaxoSmithKline's Engerix B is the leading trade name both in 2000 and 2001. GlaxoSmithKline's Havrix occupied the 3rd place and Priorix entered the top 10 in the 1st half '01 (Table2).

One of the reason of such a sharp reduction of Aventis Pasteur might be the fact that one of its brands, Vaxigripp, was not imported in 2001 while it was the 2nd brand in 2000 with an 18% share of the import of vaccines and accounted for 48% of the import volume of vaccines of Aventis Pasteur. On the other side, Vaxigripp's sales have a strong seasonal impact (Autumn-Winter) and in 2000 97% of supplies were imported during September-December.
Heber Biotec SA almost doubled the import volumes of its vaccines compared to Y2000 level and occupies the 3rd position in the ranking of manufacturers in the 1st half '01. This company imported only one vaccine named Heberbiovac HB which in the 1st half '01 became the 2nd brand vs. its 4th position in 2000.
