Vaccine candidate against rabbit hemorrhagic disease

Agriculture Area:

Veterinary vaccines

Goal

Development and evaluation of a vaccine candidate against rabbit hemorrhagic disease using the viral vp60 capside protein.

Description

The rabbit hemorrhagic disease is provoked by the highly virulent RHDV virus. The incubation period lasts between 24 to 48 hours. Generally young and adult rabbits died suddenly after 6 to 24 hours of temperature rinse. The mortality is about 70-100%.

VP60 is a major structural and highly immunogenic protein from the RHDV virus showing ability to full protection when animals are challenged with lethal doses of RHDV virus.
At the CIGB, we have cloned and expressed VP60 in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris, forming particles similar to the virus highly immunogenic, and when used as vaccine candidate it develops highly protective antibody titers upon 15 days of animal vaccination, and protection lasts for more than 180 days.

Patent Status

Granted.

Project Status

Research, proof of concept proved.

Type of collaboration requested

Interest in establishing evaluation and commercialization agreements.

Competitives advantages Milestones

Other available vaccines against RHDV are conventional; therefore, they expose animals to be infected with other viruses (mixomitosis).
Our vaccine candidate is a subunit recombinant vaccine, which produce specific and strong immunological response in vaccinated animals and avoid exposing animals to other viral infections.
